Review: Super Scribblenauts!

Super Scribblenauts by 5th Cell is a DS experience that will puzzle your brain and challenge your creativity. With the introduction of custom controls, a new hint system and the invaluable use of adjectives, the gameplay has become radically satisfying.

F1 2010 Review @ GirlGamer

To say that I was excited to recieve my review copy of Codemasters’ racing title F1 2010 would be an enormous understatement.

Immediately upon receiving my review copy I posted to my twitter, stating my excitement about being a part of what is still the ongoing action of the Formula One 2010 season.

As I played through the game I was surprised by just how thorough this game really is.  A racing game experience that is beautiful, extensive, and satisfying?  How would you rate it?

Super Scribblenauts, Costume Quest, and the race to keep up!

If there is one thing that I both enjoy and dislike most about being me it is my uncontrollable need to do more than one thing at a time.  My current dealings in gaming are as true to that statement as is the rest of my life at the moment, but then this isn’t a blog about my personal life so let’s get to the games.

Currently I am playing two games to review for my team at GirlGamer.com

F1 2010 for the 360

and Aragorn’s Quest for the Wii.

So far I have dumped most of my time into F1 2010 as I am finding the game to be very detailed and intensive  (Be sure to check back for the link to the review here and at GirlGamer.com). The other tasks have taken to the wayside but as I got closer into the late part of October i knew there were a few items I needed to attend to for personal gaming pleasure.

A) Super Scribblenauts for the DS.  I really loved Scribblenauts when it came out, in fact you can find my impressions article archived here o, so i was very excited to hear that SUPER Scribblenauts would hit stores this month. After unsuccessful attempts to acquire a review copy of the game I went out and picked up the game on release day in support of the game and the creative awesomeness that developed it.  Being the only person in the store not buying the new Medal of Honor,  I decided this was a great time to take care of October item number two.

B) Costume Quest. THQ/ Double Fine’s Costume Quest looks like the kind of game I will thoroughly enjoy not only due to my love of Halloween.

” In the game, the player controls a child that is trick-or-treating with his or her younger sibling on Halloween night when they encounter a monster that kidnaps the sibling, thinking the candy-corn outfit is really candy. The player must travel around the local neighborhood collecting items for their costume, fellows children as companions and candy in order to face the monster and retrieve the sibling. The costume aspects are used in battle segments, where the player character and companions are transformed into the monsters and creatures they are dressed as to fight other monsters.”

Costume quest is downloadable on October 20th through Xboxlive Arcade for 1200 Microsoft Points and so in preparation I picked up my points card for just such a title.

So in the coming weeks while my blog and presence slow down you can rest assured that i am diligently keeping abreast of the news and titles that are in your focus.  I too am interested in the new MOH, and Black OPS the newest COD edition, and of course AC Brotherhood as it runs through beta for PSplus subscribers and will keep you aprised as best i can.

For best results please be sure to add me on twitter at @myasharona and as always feel free to drop me a line, I would love to hear about what you are playing waiting for and looking forward to!

Packing up for the big move! 1.5 weeks left...ahhh!

Disney Epic Mickey is on the way!

Disney is on the way with their upcoming and highly anticipated title, Disney Epic Mickey, by Junction Point Studios and Disney Interactive Studios. This title is a game rooted deeply in storytelling and intended to grab the audience and immerse them in a truly interactive story.

“I believe that video games tell stories as deep and as sophisticated as movies, books or any other medium.” said Warren Spector, general manager and creative director, Disney Interactive Studios’ Junction Point, about their upcoming release, Epic Mickey.

My Review of Metroid: Other M

Metroid: Other M Review

Metroid: Other M takes us closer to Samus than any Metroid before. Metroid fans will be happy to see the side scrolling action and story continuation, while the Samus infatuated will be taken aback by her development. The horizontally held controller and 3rd to 1st person POV’s will have you firing weapons like nobody’s business but could a major glitch in the game keep you from completion? While you may feel strongly one way or the other about Samus herself, one thing is for certain; she kicks butt in a Wii experience like no other.

Hector Badge of Carnage

Point and click adventure titles have always had a spot in my heart. Since the ‘good old’ days of King’s Quest and Leisure Suit Larry, the genre has had decreasing appeal to me (aside from my continued Myst following of course) and it wasn’t until the mass eruption of mobile device gaming that I spent any time reflecting upon the genre and where it was best suited for me as a gamer.

In search of a stand above mobile device game, I stumbled across Hector: Badge of Carnage for the iphone. This title has the nuts and bolts of a point and click adventure, but modernized with the ‘slide’ functionalities of the device. Using the slide is not one of my personal fortes, but becoming comfortable playing a game with no buttons will not erase 28 years of engrained button mashing from my veins.

The 3DS: Nintendo’s next big thing.

Like many others I watched E3 remotly as Nintendo talked about the 3Ds that would soon be unleashed upon the world. With my DSLite not far from reach, I smiled with apprehensive glee. Finally a DS upgrade that I might be interested in.

Granted, I am not a fan of 3d. yet.

Movies, games, and tv manufacturers all on the 3D train, I feel a sort of compelled rebellion to the movement. Don’t get me wrong, I saw Avatar in the theatre too, but I strongly believe that not everything needs to be 3d! NOT EVERYTHING –  do you hear me George Lucas?!

But I digress.

As an already four eyes, the prospect of a small piece of 3D technology (the kind that did NOT require me to wear a second pair of 3d glasses overlapping my already expensive and now scratched spectacles) is somewhat intriguing.  Skeptically I waited and watched.

“Control the level of 3d?  Turn it off completely? You don’t say…..”

Then, more specs started to surface.

According to the release:

  • The 3DS has two cameras on the outside of the device, capable of taking 3D photos and capturing 3D video, as well as a camera positioned above the top screen on the inside of the device which faces the player, capable of taking 2D photos and capturing 2D video
  • The system also has 3D movie playback capability; Nintendo has made deals with Warner Bros, Disney, and DreamWorks to deliver 3D movies.
  • In addition to its own software, the Nintendo 3DS will be backward compatible with Nintendo DS software, including DSi software. Announced titles include Kid Icarus: Uprising and Mario Kart 3DS.
  • At launch, the Nintendo 3DS cards will hold up to 2GB of game data and look almost exactly the same as those of the current DS
  • It was announced at the Nintendo of Japan press event on September 29, 2010 that the 3DS will have a Virtual Console Service with Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and “Classic Games” in 3D. HELL YES
  • Multitasking is available on the 3DS (i.e. You can access web browser while in game).
  • Miis will be available on the system. There will be a new Mii Creator on 3DS with the ability to import from the Wii and create a Mii from a photo taken by one of the cameras. There also will be a 3DS Mii Plaza to house all the Miis you’ve seen in Tag Mode.
  • The system supports multiplayer gameplay via a local wireless connection or over the Internet. Expanding upon the connectivity of the Nintendo DS, the Nintendo 3DS features an “always on” background connectivity system that current trademarks suggest the name being “CrossPass” which can automatically seek and connect to wireless network nodes such as Wi-Fi hotspots, sending and downloading information in the background while in sleep mode or while playing a game.

Naturally by now I want that 3DS. I want this device as much as a grown woman can want a DS (turns out that is a LOT).

Carefully,  I am now paying attention to news regarding the 3DS, when I can get it and how much it will be.

But pause for a moment. Sure there are lots of great features but what GAMES will i be able to play? Well it turns out there is a lot on the horizon and even if there weren’t… there remains one. ONE to beat all others in the race to my 3DS heart: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 3D

*fangirlsqueel*
Metal Freakin Gear already scheduled for 2011 release.
And oh my lookie here:
Contra, Bomberman, Ninja Gaiden, Zelda? Yes PLEASE.
.
More News!

Yesterday Nintendo announced the release dates and price point for their upcoming 3DS. Hitting North American stores in March 31, 2011 the 3DS is expected to be sold at approximately $300.

OUCH

Ouch Nintendo!  We are now looking at the price of a major console. Is this portable gaming system really expecting to compete with the PS3 and 360? Granted I already have those, but most DS users I know are under the age of 18.

So who is your target audience now? I think it might be me. STILL, while i want the 3ds something fierce, and March is possibly long enough away that I might be able to fill the piggy bank with pennies, thats a lot of cashola. Think of all the bills i could pay with that!

How can I justify that kind of spending on a handheld unit?

How will you?
