Electronic Arts E3 Press Conference: A Summary

Electronic Arts E3 Press Conference: A Summary

As we started into the Electronic Arts E3 Press Conference today there were a few things many of us were anxious to learn about. The anticipation, for me, centered around Battlefield Bad Company 3, Mass Effect 3, and SSX. As the conference began we soon discovered so much more in the works from EA.

The conference began with EA & BioWare’s Mass Effect 3 Presentation.  Casey Husdson spoke of  how Mass Effect was “designed to be a trilogy” and continued to say that  “longtime fans of the franchise will see how all of their choices have lead to the breaking point.” “ This is ALL OUT GALACTIC WAR.” He said.  In the demo Shepard attempts to destroy a reaper base. The game play was really compelling, high action, and included large scale action combat. Casey then showed new gameplay trailer “Fall of Earth”

Mass Effect 3 will see release on March 6 2012

EA then went on to discuss that should expect new games and new services over the next year.

Origin.com  was announced as the new service for viewing and downloading exclusive EA content.

NFS The Run was presented by Jason DeLong. Like previous Need for Speed titles, The Run centers on a race across the country, From San Francisco to NYC. This year the Autolog feature is weaved into the story so that every second of every race counts towards your development. Unlike previous NFS titles a new component of the game takes you out of the car and put you on foot.  NFS The Run will include foot chase gameplay.  EA then presented a NFS Demo. The foot chase portions of the game, while they looked awesome, are still a large enough departure from NFS that it seemed less cohesive.

Star Wars Old Republic was discussed briefly by Greg of Bioware. No news for this title was released but EA did show a trailer.   This trailer appeared to be included out of obligation and not because there was anything new to offer.

The SSX portion of the presentation started with Trailer. EA spoke of  “reinventing the franchise” with an all new slogan: Own the Planet. SSX will be massively open world and will include “ridiculous amounts of content.”  With a new trailer for Kiori, a beloved SSX character, EA promised that a NEW character would be announced on the Facebook fan page before end of e3.  You can check out Kiori’s trailer at Origin.com

Microsoft E3 2011 Press Conference: Impressions

The Microsoft Press Conference has been anticipated, predicted, and discussed at great length and today it happened. A lot of games and features were discussed at the E3 press conference so let’s break it down and have a look at the meat and potatoes of it.

What was looked at during the press conference?

  • Modern Warfare 3:
  • Tomb Raider
  • Mass Effect 3
  • Ghost Recon Future Soldier
  • UFC Ultimate Champion
  • Gears 3
  • Ryse
  • Halo Combat evolved HD
  • Forza MotorSport 4
  • Fable: The Journey
  • MindCraft for Kinect
  • Disneyland Adventures
  • Star Wars Kinect
  • Sesame Street Once upon a Monster
  • Kinect Fun Labs
  • Kinect Sports Season Two
  • Dance Central 2
  • “dawn of a new trilogy” = Halo 4

So there we have it, Kinect in core games was the ultimate focus of today’s Kinect Conference…erm, Microsoft Conference. With the inclusion of kinect’s motion controls now being included in more of the adult, historically core, gaming titles is the kinect about to become an xbox staple or is Microsoft trying to bridge the gap between casual, family, and ‘hardcore’ gamers? Whatever the case is the inclusion of Kinect in more titles means great things for gaming and health consumers who like games that get them up off the couch.

Highlights:

The Expected

We knew we would see news about Dance Central 2 and after today’s presentation we now know that Dance Central 2 will have two new features. Dance Central 2 will not only allow you to import all of your Dance Central Songs into the game but will also utilize multiplayer dance in game. Demonstrated at the Microsoft Press Conference to the Usher tune “Falling in love again”, the new multiplayer dance option is multiplying the possibility of fun.

Star Wars Kinect was on the radar of many going into this conference. Questions surrounding implementation and graphical style loomed before the conference and while on the conference floor our very own GamerFitNation staff was spotted blogging that “The graphics look really stunning”. Now call me a skeptic because not only was I not concerned with how it looked via stream but I also was slightly concerned for the frantic movements of the player. It did not strike me as a fun experience. Using Kinect motion control you can use the powers of the force, your lightsaber, and jump to vault over enemies.

Forza Motorsport 4 is a welcome and anticipated announcement. As a fan of the racing genre in general I find it all too exciting when I learn that Turn 10 Studios is going to such great lengths to simulate the driving experience. The inclusion of kinect means that gamers will now have an interactive moveabout the car, to inspect car specs, and that driving subtleties such has head tilt and voice command will make the experience all the more convincing.

The Unexpected

Of course you finished Halo 3 in legendary mode and now you know just where the newly announced Halo4 will pick up. That’s right, Master Chief is awake and making an appearance at E3 2011. Fans of the franchise were also pleased to learn more about Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary, which is going to include six multiplayer maps from the original Halo Combat Evolved plus a FireFight map and use of the reach engine to allow for matchmaking compatibility with classic modes.

Xbox 360 E3 Tweetup

My friends over at GamerFitNation had a grande ol time at the Xbox 360 Tweetup and I thought I’d let the website’s community know about it.

GamerFitNation at the Xbox360 E3 Tweetup

On Sunday June 5th hordes of gamers (developers, publishers, journalists, etc) descended upon Los Angeles to prepare for the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).  E3 technically runs from June 7th-9th and includes a plethora of conferences and events in which game developers present their upcoming games and game-related hardware. What you may or may not be aware of is all of the craziness and fun that happens outside of the regular ‘office hours’ of E3.

Being GamerFitNation’s first year at E3 our boys Antwand and Gregory are taking some time to meet up with other industry members. They have it rough out there, I’m sure. The first event of the week for our fearless warriors was Major Nelson’s Xbox360 Tweetup. Be aware the Xbox Pre E3 Tweetup was not your average tweetup.

PSN Welcomes me Back….Finally!

We knew it was coming, we just weren’t sure when.

Today my inbox was delighted to receive the official email from PSN regarding the return of the PSN store and the start of their “Welcome Back” program.

In case you haven’t been paying attention, the Welcome Back program for users of Sony’s Play Station Network is an effort to appease upset after a major security breach that put personal information (including passwords and credit card info) in the hands of hackers.

For the most part I have stayed away from discussion about this controversial breach of trust and how I felt as a customer. Suffice to say Sony felt the need to extend an apology to consumers and the Welcome Back program is an extension of that apology.

The email sounded a little something like this:

Dear MyaSharona,

Thanks for your patience and continued support during our service outage. To show you how
much we value that, we want to let you know about our “Welcome Back” appreciation program:

Two Free PS3 Games

  • Dead Nation
  • InFAMOUS
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • Super StarDust HD

PlayStation®Plus—30 Days Free**
A premium subscription service that gets you access to free games, huge discounts and great exclusives.

.

100 Free Virtual Items
To welcome users Home, PlayStation®Home will be offering 100 free virtual items.

.

This is our way of saying thank you for being a loyal fan. And once again, welcome back to PlayStation®Network.

Sincerely,
The PlayStation®Network Team

If you have not yet received your email I would wager that it is on it’s way. With the free access to the PlayStation Plus service, I can’t help but wonder how many will continue the service even after the trial period. Is this a case of win/win?
.
With E3 literally around the corner I tend to think that Sony would be best to lay low after such a debacle and that instead of pushing the newest, the up and coming, that they enter into the next phase of damage control.  Of course what I think should happen is rarely what actually happens and so I wait with piqued curiosity as we approach anticipated major announcements.
.
But back to the question at hand. Sony’s Welcome Back program is providing us with some free, albeit old, content. Of the games available for you on your PS3 console, which ones did YOU download?
.

If you took advantage of the PS+ service, PSP downloads, or PS Home items, I’d love to hear from you as well.

Don’t forget that with the Welcome Back program:

  • You can download the available content on up to five activated systems that are associated with the PlayStation Network account.
  • Existing PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive an additional 60 days of free subscription.

Free from Square Enix: Imaginary Range

Imaginary Range from Square Enix is a unique playable story that makes a formidable attempt to marriage sequential story telling with casual gameplay. Although short, and easy, the game elements are interjected within the story of a comic at intervals that help propel the story forward.  Like all things Square Enix the artwork is eye catching and undoubtedly worth the App Store price tag of free.

Described by Square Enix as a “full-color comic that includes a selection of mini-games inserted within the flow of the plot [in order to immerse] gamers alongside the cast as they proceed through the story”, Imaginary Range is a pleasant push away from conventional app presentation.

“The project was overseen by Motomu Toriyama, director of FINAL FANTASY® XIII, with Souki Tsukishima, author of the novel Emeth: Ningyo-tsukai no Shima, who wrote the story. The art was handled by Toshiyuki Itahana, character designer for the FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES® series.”-SquareEnix.

The mini games in this release are simple, easy, but somehow still effective in achieving an overall cohesiveness. As you read your way through the comic you are encouraged to  collect special content, similar to the collectable stickers in a game like Little Big Planet. Collecting special content does, of course, open up even more options that become available as you finish and advance. The mini games consist of picture puzzles and missile shooters and are always quick enough so as not pull your from the story’s plot for too long. While the games might be quick they are also very easy, almost insultingly so, and so the entire experience shouldn’t be expected to last you hours upon hours.

The comic itself is interactive and eye catching with an overly complex storyline. Set in France, as it is attacked by an enigmatic menace, the comic features a cast that can freely jump between reality and the world of dreams. The characters are, of course, slightly more sexualized than necessary and seem to embrace all the drama of their situation with the bit of quirky light heartedness that you would expect from any manga you might be reading. In a recent press release Square Enix described the story with the following statement:

“The nation of France remains in a state of complete chaos after a sudden attack by a giant creature known only as Omega. Cid, a technician and psychotherapy specialist, travels into France and works alongside his friend Ciela to put a stop to the menace. What is Omega after? Why are Cid and Ciela talking about the end of the world as they fight? At the end of a battle that transcends dreams and reality, the world will come closer and closer to the truth.”

The English words appear to have been integrated into the app at a higher resolution than the artwork itself, making the thin crisp lines of the speech bubbles a little jolting compared to the soft lines of the artwork. In some instances the Japanese characters that remain part of the original artwork, alongside the French characters that appear in some settings, make for three languages in a single sequence and small details such as that will either add or take away from your experience, depending upon your position on such an eclectic visual mix.

Imaginary Range from Square Enix is FREE in the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users and a recent post at the Square Enix Blog indicates that an Android version will be available very VERY shortly. With a price tag of free you just can’t lose, but don’t expect much more than an interesting mix of sequential art mediums. In a recent review TouchArcade even went as far as to predict “that Squeenix might be releasing this to give us a taste, then either sell additional “issues” either as separate apps or in-app purchase”. Whatever the case, a beefier more challenging experience from Imaginary Range would only further the structure they have started to build with this comic-game hybrid.

Be sure to check back at the Official Imaginary Range Website for details about the android release.

See you in September! Gears of War 3 Beta Wraps up.

It seems like it was only yesterday that we were fighting drones, capturing leaders, and lancing our way through the closest of enemies. Oh that’s right, it WAS yesterday. Today is a new day my friends and that means that the Gears of War 3 Beta is officially over.

Since early April the Gears of War 3 Beta has been tried and tested by fans from all over. At first you may have noticed that, unless you had purchased Bulletstorm, it was a little bit tricky to get your hands on one of the coveted Gears beta codes and many websites were running various giveaways and contests in order to best distribute them. By around May 4th players were encouraged to invite friends and by the last week, of this four week run of the beta, codes were being given away like candy; delicious, killing candy.

So began my brief encounter with the Beta. As I have discussed many times with friends, multiplayer aficionados, and Gears fans alike, I had no intention on joining the Gears beta. There were two reasons I had no intentions of getting into the action and I will share them with you too: 1. I plan to buy this game and 2. I am mainly a campaign player. But when friend and gamer DJ Spin offered me the chance to jump in just to ‘see’ what it was about curiosity got the better of me………….
